چکیده

In 1893, Maydl’ conceived of a plan for introducing an anesthetic through a tracheal tube; and Eisenmenger’ added an inflatable cuff around the distal end of the tube. However nothing was done with these ideas for over a quarter of a century. In 1924, Waters2 described the “carbon-dioxide absorption” method of anesthesia, and four years later Waters and Guedel3 published an article on the “Intratracheal Catheter” in which they described a cuff to be made either by cementing a piece of rubber sheeting around the catheter or by a double layer of rubber slipped tightly over the tube. We have constructed a rugged cuff with material found in and around the hospital at the cost of only a few pennies.

Faulty construction of a reinforced latex endotracheal tube.

SUMMARY This paper describes a fault in the cuff of a reinforced latex endotracheal tube, where the cuff splits into layers. On attempting to deflate the cuff, the pilot balloon subsides but not the cuff itself. The cause of this fault is examined, and, by implication, steps to eliminate it during manufacture suggested. It would appear that not all such available latex endotracheal tubes are po...

Decrease in cuff pressure during the measurement procedure: an experimental study

BACKGROUND To prevent endotracheal tube (ETT)-related complications during mechanical ventilation, ETT cuff pressure should be kept within proper range. In clinical settings, cuff pressure often decreases from target values. METHODS We performed an experimental study to investigate the effects of measuring devices and endotracheal tubes on change in cuff pressure. We continuously measured cuf...

A comparison of endotracheal tube cuff pressures using estimation techniques and direct intracuff measurement.

Cuffed endotracheal tubes are one aspect of airway management designed to ensure safety, yet patients can be at risk for injury from underinflated and overinflated endotracheal cuffs. Tracheal pressures exceeding approximately 48 cm H2O impede capillary blood flow, potentially causing tracheal damage, and pressures below approximately 18 mm Hg may increase the risk of aspiration. There is no st...

Comparison of tracheal tube cuff inflation pressure among anesthesia team with different gradual level

Background & Objectives: Tracheal intubation is frequently performed in operating room. Over inflation of the endotracheal tube cuff is a risk factor for tracheal ischemia and subsequent complications. On the other hand inadequate cuff pressure increases the risk of aspiration of gastric contents. In this study, the endotracheal tube cuff pressure filled by the anesthesia team has been compared...

A Hidden Fault in Cuffed Tubes.

Faults in anaesthetic apparatus are not uncommon, and in most cases are due to poor maintenance of well made equipment. Faults can also arise, however, at the stage of manufacture. Such defects may escape detection by the most thorough anaesthetist, revealing themselves as some mystifying or even tragic complication. The final link with the patient is often an endotracheal tube, and this slende...
